WORK: collaborative

The Pleasant Matthews: ParalleL

For well more than a year I have been working on a really loose series of collaborative drawings with Eric Simons, Nick Lakowski, Nathan Matthews, and (on occasion) others. Nathan’s one part of a band called The Pleasant Matthews, which has just released the album ParalleL. It features some of the drawings we’ve produced together, and sounds really great!

Oh, also, if you are still looking for phrases to paint: I was laying on the beach on Mayne Island this weekend, and I overheard a snippet of conversation between two middle aged women. The only thing I heard clearly was “I’m so old I owe Jesus a dollar”.

Made me laugh.

Hey Paul,

Here’s something that just made me laugh out loud in an otherwise quiet Sechelt Public Library. It’s from an email from my little sister who’s been cutting hair in Salmon Arm for about one year now:

“It was a lovely afternoon. I cut my third ever mullet today (I can’t believe there are still people out there who get mullets). It was fun, you can’t really screw up a mullet ha ha oh well he gave me a $10 tip and said he would be back.”

Random enough for you my friend?

Sounds as if your summer is going well. I hope you are less stressed than last time I saw you. There was no time for chatting over a beer, and that’s no good.

I’m firefighting and scraping together a little freelance work here on the Sunshine Coast for the summer. Chainsaws, helicopters, gym routines, fire trucks, old growth forests: It’s a far cry from my arts degree, but the people you meet are pretty interesting.

Let’s keep in touch, ok? Good luck with the show, and tell me if this snippet whips you into a creative frenzy… (this one would be fun to review!)

Hey Paul,

I’m just gonna put a couple phrases, and you can look them up at your leisure. Whether Google Images or Wikipedia or whatever, I’m sure it’ll be pretty neat. Even if you don’t use any of this, I can’t wait for your exhibit! Keep me updated.

Anyway this is it.

1. Edie Sedgwick
2. House of Leaves

Short and sweet.

And Batman elicited shitty pictures from Google. So, I give you two to choose from, cuz I can’t desided. “Americanism” – something simple for your artistic leverage, but mildly political. I quite liked this one http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www-db.stanford.edu/~mmorten/porpaganda/wwi/us–45/destroybrute.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www-db.stanford.edu/~mmorten/propoganda/wwi/Xus–45-1.html&h=400&w=300&sz=19&h1=en&start=33&tbnid=8X0JbURTwOV_oM:&tbnh=120&tbnw=90&prev=/images%3Fq%3Damericanism%26start%3D18%26ndsp%3D18%26svnum%3D10%26h1%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN

But I also liked, on a totally silly note, “Gay Batman” cuz there were like fuckin’ water colour pictures of Batman and Robin kissing, that I found totally meaningless, but funny like a tickle. Senseless, no one knows why its funny, and its really not, but you laugh anyways.

Good luck painting etc. See you at the FAF show eh!
