“Tadeusz and Gregory are out celebrating. The experiment was a success. It worked like a charm. They’ve just raised their drinks together in congratulatory self-satisfaction. Liquid is in mouths, but a deflating pause confounds their expectant esophagi and betrays what has gently yet swiftly entered their thoughts only now: further possibilities and far deeper implications. Both men swallow slowly and deliberately in synchronised gestures of defeat. Tadeusz then taps the fingers of his left hand upon the table while glaring at the closed-captioned newscast on the flatscreen above the bar. Gregory loosens his tie, undoes the top button of his shirt, and silently stares into the depths of his beer.”
